The Dominican Republic is the country with the greatest air connectivity in Latin America and the Caribbean and has become a regional benchmark in aeronautical safety.

During his participation in the HOY Economic Meeting, Civil Aviation Board chairman (JAC), Héctor Porcella, stressed that the DR maintains sustained growth in the aeronautical sector and currently has connections to more than 150 international destinations.

He explained that, in the last six years, the authorities have worked on designing strategies aimed at strengthening civil aviation, identifying new markets and expanding growth opportunities for Dominican airlines.

He pointed out that there are currently seven Dominican airlines operating international flights, including routes to the United States, the main source market for tourists to the country.

Porcella indicated that, in the first four months of the year alone, more than 640 thousand passengers were mobilized on national airlines, Arajet being the main national airline, having recently received its 15th aircraft of a total order of 30 Boeing aircraft.

He emphasized how support from the Dominican Government has been fundamental in fostering the growth of air connectivity, considered key not only for tourism, but also to attract investments and facilitate international business.

He also stressed that the country has diversified its tourism offer by promoting sports, medical, cultural and ecological tourism, in addition to traditional sun and sea tourism, which has generated the need to expand routes and capture new international markets.

The official said that airports such as Punta Cana, Las Américas, and Santiago maintain annual growth of between 10% and 12%, reflecting the current energy of Dominican civil aviation.

He also highlighted the international positioning achieved by Dominican civil aviation, pointing out that the DR currently chairs the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission (CLAC), the body in charge of drawing up civil aviation policies in the region, which he attributed to the growth and strengthening that the national aeronautical sector has experienced in recent years.
