The private sector accounts for more than 80% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and generates 85% of the country’s employment, according to the chairman of the National Council of Private Enterprise (Conep), Pedro Brache.

He explained that the private sector also accounts for 75.3% of the tax taxes collected by the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGII).

He cited the 2017 study “Private Sector as an Engine of Growth in the Dominican Republic,” which reveals that the private sector accounts for 85.7% of the investment made in the country.

He cited that the 100,000 companies registered in the country generate more than one million 600 thousand direct and formal jobs.

During his speech at the celebration of the 59th anniversary of Conep and the National Private Enterprise Day, which was attended by President Luis Abinader and numerous ministers at the El Embajador Hotel, Brache said that the country’s economic recovery has been faster than that of many countries in the region, including recovering employment levels.

He attributed that conquest to the unity of the sector which has made it stronger amid the effects of the covid-19 pandemic and now the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

“This social contract, which sometimes goes unnoticed or is taken for granted is, however, the great secret that has allowed our economic recovery to have been faster than that of many countries in the region,” he said.

Speakers at the event included Moisés Naím, member of the Carnegie Endowment and Ricardo Haussman, professor of Economic Development Practice at the John F. Kennedy School of Harvard University, who spoke about the Dominican economy’s good performance.

At the end of the activity, President Luis Abinader considered that the strong alliance between the Government and the productive sectors has established important milestones in the institutionalization of the country, economic strengthening and the recovery of employment and growth.

He explained that all this is thanks to the willingness of the businessmen who have taken the support for the policies proposed by the Government in different areas very seriously.

These policies, he said, have given way to a climate of very positive mutual collaboration between the Government and the business sector that have made the recovery of productive sectors possible to a large extent.

He said that the General Development Strategy and the Digital Transformation Agenda 2030 promote the development of corporate entrepreneurship, companies and MSMEs.
