People show their trips to Dubai, Paris, Switzerland, Miami, or Peru through social networks. And no wonder, these destinations are classified as expensive, so personal finance experts recommend budgeting, planning, and saving to “give yourself a well-deserved vacation”. Others exclaim “That’s what I work for” and “God will provide” when buying an airline ticket, booking a hotel room, or dining at a fancy restaurant.

However you plan a trip, one thing is certain: some consumers are looking to travel frugally, according to agency Squaremouth, which says travelers are looking for more affordable destinations this 2023.

The Dominican Republic ranks fifth, with an average travel cost of US$4,497, the most affordable being Colombia (US$3,344) and Mexico (US$3,878). However, tourist arrivals are on the rise. Between January and July of this year, 4,879,656 tourists arrived, 14% more than the 4,282,209 visitors reported in the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.

Visiting the Island of Enchantment, Puerto Rico is 13.1% cheaper than enjoying Punta Cana, with an average cost of US$3,907 and a US$572 difference with respect to the US$4,479 of the Bermuda Islands.

The international travel company points out that the Bahamas is only 3.5% more expensive than the Dominican Republic, with US$4,658, followed by Jamaica with US$4,698 and Aruba with US$4,917. In addition, the Asian continent is known as an ideal and safe destination for backpackers. However, visiting Vietnam or the Philippines will cost an average of US$5,181 and US$5,330, respectively.

However, 21,000 people spent more than US$133 million in destinations considered expensive, with the average cost being US$11,000.

The company claims that Africa is the “most expensive” continent for tourism. A breakdown of the data shows that trekking, and visiting natural parks or zoos are some of the experiences that tourists enjoy in Congo, but a trip per person can cost US$32,400, almost twice as much as its counterpart Botswana (US$17,753).

Meanwhile, travel to Antarctica (US$17,730), Zimbabwe (US$14,393), and Tanzania (US$13,244) exceeds the US$4,000 average of visiting the Dominican Republic.

Sightseeing in Kenya costs US$11,544, US$893 more than the US$10,651 in Central African Republic, and US$1,297 more than the US$10,247 spent in Monaco.

But, in addition, it states that these tourists purchase travel insurance for US$717.
