The Dominican Republic is being used as an air hub and connection center for airlines serving travelers from South America and other regions who use the Arajet airline at the airports in Santo Domingo (SDQ) and Punta Cana (PUJ).
This was stated by Elizabeth Giraldo, Regional Sales Manager for South America at Arajet, who explained that the airline operates in six countries in this subregion: Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. However, the airline has a presence in 17 countries, with a total of 25 routes and destinations across North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.
“The Dominican Republic has great potential and has already become a strategic hub for connecting North and South America, given its position in the Caribbean and its proximity to other countries, making it feasible to establish connections within a maximum of nine to ten hours,” she said while participating as a speaker at the Anato tourism fair in Bogotá.
In terms of demand, Argentina and Colombia are the South American countries with the highest flow of passengers to the Dominican Republic. Additionally, Canada is the leading source of tourists to this destination with Arajet, due to its cold weather.
Giraldo recalled that in 2024, they moved more than 1.2 million passengers, and it is projected that with the entry into the U.S. market, that number will increase to 1.7 million in 2025.
She mentioned that despite being a young airline that started operations in September 2022, it has been very well received by passengers.
Currently, the airline expects to receive three new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to increase its fleet to 13 state-of-the-art airplanes with the highest efficiency on the market.
Regarding route expansion, Giraldo announced the recent launch of flights to Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico, thanks to the approval of open skies with the United States. She also mentioned that they continue to reinforce frequencies on the destinations where they already operate.
