Between January and December 2021, the National Council of Export Free Zones approved 100 new free zone companies with an approximate investment of US$231.5 million and forecasts of 12,575 new direct jobs, according to the Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, Víctor Ito Bisonó.
Bisonó described it as a historic year for the Dominican Republic “for its surprising economic recovery” and reiterated that procedures are being made more efficient so that investments continue to arrive in the country and generate jobs for all Dominicans.
“I am delighted to report that this sector has generated US$ 6,500 million for the country. We closed the year with 734 companies operating in 79 industrial parks and more than 182,000 direct jobs,” he added.
During the meeting, Bisonó announced the approval of a new free zone park and 24 new companies, entailing an overall investment of more than US$ 78.7 million and 3,918 new jobs.
In addition, statistics presented by the National Council of Export Free Zones show that the 3,918 jobs constitute a record figure in the last 17 years, because this sector has not exceeded 180,000 direct jobs since 2004.
The Central Bank highlighted the free zones performance in economic activity for the period January-October 2021, as one of the sectors that registered the most significant year-on-year variations compared to 2020.
