Every year, the Dominican Republic is a major recipient of Foreign Direct Investment. The arrival of foreign capital, along with tourism, exports, and free zones, are the prime movers of the Dominican economy.
According to the definition by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), {Foreign direct investment} “is an investment made by a resident enterprise in one economy (direct investor or parent enterprise) with the objective of establishing a lasting interest in an enterprise that is resident in another economy….”

The United States, Canada and Mexico are the three largest sources of foreign direct investment.
In 2021, the total flow was US$1362.3 million and at the end of the first quarter of 2022, the amount reached US$320.3 million.
Foreign direct investment reached US$1,870.9 million between January and June 2022, an expansion of 8.0% compared to the same period in 2021 and 20% with the first half of 2019. The sectors that received the most FDI in the first half of 2022 were tourism, trade and industry, mining, and real estate.
