- The company highlights its advances in tourism infrastructure, environmental conservation, culture, and social development as part of its strategy to diversify the Dominican Republic’s tourism offering.
Grupo Puntacana commemorates its 57th anniversary this November 1, with a strategy focused on diversifying the Dominican tourism industry through the development of sports tourism, luxury hospitality, cultural promotion, and environmental and social sustainability projects.
Founded in 1969, when the Punta Cana area was home to only about 52 families, the company has become one of the key drivers of tourism development in the eastern region of the country.
One of the major milestones in this journey was the construction of the Punta Cana International Airport, regarded as the world’s first privately owned international airport, which now welcomes more than 11 million passengers annually.
Marking the anniversary, Frank R. Rainieri, Founder and Chairman of Grupo Puntacana, emphasized that the company’s greatest legacy has been creating opportunities and fostering growth within the communities connected to tourism development.
“When we arrived in Punta Cana, there was nothing here but nature and the dream of building something for our country. Fifty-seven years later, what makes us proudest is not the hotels or the airport, but the community that has grown around them and the opportunities we have created together,” Rainieri stated.
Commitment to Sports Tourism
Among the company’s growth areas is sports tourism, with international events designed to attract visitors and position the country as a destination for world-class competitions.
One of its flagship attractions is the Corales Puntacana Championship, an official PGA TOUR event that, in its ninth edition, brought together 144 professional golfers from 20 countries across five continents.
According to the company, the tournament generated 4.8 billion media impressions across digital and print platforms in 153 countries, while reaching 3.4 million television viewers in the United States.
The company’s sports strategy also includes padel, tennis, and polo, with activities hosted at Puntacana Resort and featuring international stars such as Spanish professional padel player Coki Nieto and tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked world No. 3.
In addition, Grupo Puntacana has established a strategic partnership with the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) to strengthen sports infrastructure and attract professional teams and international competitions to the eastern region of the Dominican Republic.
The company also supports Dominican athletes. Through the Grupo Puntacana Foundation, it assists boxer Junior Alcántara in preparation for the upcoming Olympic cycle and continues its collaboration with Creando Sueños Olímpicos (CRESO).
New Hospitality Projects
In the luxury segment, Grupo Puntacana is expanding its hospitality portfolio with projects aimed at attracting high-income travelers.
- Serena, a Luxury Collection Resort, is scheduled to open in 2027.
- Rosewood Punta Cana, planned for 2029, will mark the arrival of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in the Dominican Republic.
Culture and Environmental Conservation
The diversification strategy also extends to arts and culture. On October 23, the company inaugurated the Rainieri Cultural Center in a ceremony attended by President Luis Abinader.
The center is designed to promote Dominican history, heritage, and cultural expression, while also serving as a gathering place for local communities and visitors.
On the environmental front, the Grupo Puntacana Foundation inaugurated new facilities for the Marine Innovation Center (CIM), dedicated to research, education, and the restoration of marine ecosystems.
