In 2018, trade between the Dominican Republic and the United States exceeded US$13,800 million the National Statistics Office (ONE) reported in a statement on (Monday).
Dominican exports to the United States accounted for 37.55% of the total trade between the two nations in 2018 while 62.45% corresponds to imports received by the Dominican Republic from the USA.
The figures indicate that trade between both nations increased by 9.41% in 2018 compared to 2017, with an increase of 10.63% in exports and 8.69% in imports.
In the statement the director of the National Statistics Office (ONE), Alexandra Izquierdo, highlighted the importance of trade relations between the two countries and pointed out that the United States «has historically been the country´s main trade partner».
On the other hand, Izquierdo indicated that the figures in “Dominican Republic by Numbers” compiled by the National Statistics Office (ONE), Dominican Republic, whose main source of revenue is tourism, received 2.2 million American visitors in 2018, «contributing to the progress and socio-economic development of the country.»
«A significant number of visitors to the Dominican Republic come from the United States, which represents a significant contribution to tourism and, therefore, to the country´s economy,» said the official.
In addition to having the United States as its main trade partner, the Dominican Republic is part of the Free Trade Agreement (DR-Cafta) signed between Central America and USA more than a decade ago.
About 1.8 million Dominicans live in the United States providing the Dominican Republic with US$ 4 billion in remittances annually.
