DMK Abogados was pleased to receive the visit of Nicholas Sutherland, Manager for the development of new markets at JAMPRO (Jamaica Promotion Corporation), a Jamaican government agency that promotes exports and Thomas Allan Marley, Business Attaché of the Jamaican Embassy in the Dominican Republic.

We analyzed the opportunities for trade exchange and cooperation between both countries, considering the post pandemic economic strengthening that Jamaica has experienced, creating new favorable possibilities for foreign investment and cooperation between the two nations.

The business areas discussed included, in particular, tourism, construction, free zones and the industrialization of goods and services, where the Jamaican government is joining forces to increase investments through personalized assistance to companies and private businesses interested in investing in Jamaica, with a specialized group of legal and technical – commercial advisors available to investors to help them with the necessary steps and administrative formalities to set up and develop commercial operations.

We discussed the willingness of the Jamaican government to provide industrially suited land in the areas surrounding the Kingston seaport, to allow manufacturing and export industries to set up, considering the geographical advantage offered by Jamaica, serving as an international trade bridge, especially between Europe and America. We also talked about the tax incentives offered by the government for companies covered by the special economic zone model, a scheme compatible with the development of free zones that is underway in the Dominican Republic.

Important Dominican companies based in Jamaica include IMCA Jamaica, Magna Motors, DISS Jamaica, Codelpa, Therrestra, as well as others in the tourism sector, some of which have been assisted by DMK Abogados in starting their operations in that country.
