The Vice President of Interinstitutional Relations of the Puntacana Group, Simón Suárez, said that the Dominican Republic is a world reference for tourism.
He added that the Dominican Republic still has a market to take advantage of, namely, ecotourism.
“Considering the size of our country, we are in a model position, and we are a model destination. This is already clear. Now, we can begin to talk in qualitative terms about growth,” he said.
Suárez added that the tourism sector has improved its capacity to manage the facilities, as well as the ability to manage the attractions.
“In other words, we have done nothing towards exploiting the use of our national parks and ecological reserves from the point of view of tourism, despite the fact that we have been talking about it for years,” he said.
Post-pandemic growth
The executive explained that after the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, not only did the industry return to the pace it had in previous years, but it expanded.
“Maybe we should say that we have overcome the effects of the pandemic in terms of the growth line, rather than the recovered from them,” he added.
He added that the potential for development and expansion is greater, “because, since the end of the pandemic, we have seen quite a few achievements in the industry that allow us to expand our base. In other words, after the pandemic we rediscovered the cruise industry and it turns out that now we are leaders in the Caribbean in cruises.”
He pointed out that in the country the Dominican aeronautical service has been restored in the Dominican airlines that were lost.
“That is another aspect that also gives us a much more solid, much more diversified platform of possibilities. Therefore, it is very likely that we will maintain and exceed the average growth, let’s say, of the 15 years prior to 2019, which was already exceptional,” he said.
