Carlos Iglesias Rodríguez, president of the Santiago Chamber of Commerce and Production, stated that the productive and commercial activity of the capital of Cibao has a specific weight much higher than the 10% represented by its population, therefore, its fiscal contribution “of the conservative way”, around 13% to 15% of the national total.
At the inauguration of the 34th version of Expo Cibao, the businessman stated that if the contribution to the city’s GDP is compared with public investment in infrastructure in Santiago, “it was barely, on average, 3,884 million from 2016 to 2019, equivalent to about 3% of the total ”.
Iglesias Rodríguez cited the report from the Superintendency of Banks, which explains that Santiago is higher than the deposits in the province of Santo Domingo but also exceeds the sum of the deposits in the South and East regions of the country.
In his speech, the business leader expressed his support for the reforms proposed by President Luis Abinader. Similarly, he highlighted the initiatives announced by the president to develop in Santiago.
At Expo Cibao 2021, whose motto is “New challenges, new goals”, Carlos Iglesias Rodríguez affirmed that the business sector in Santiago hopes to reverse this worrying trend. He assured that the investments planted in this city “are reproduced and returned, in an accelerated manner, in the form of jobs, collections, and production.” He cited the example of the expansion of several kilometers on the Duarte highway, in the Santiago-Licey section, where several companies were installed with their share of job creation.
