Abinader highlighted the economic opportunities that its positioning as a regional logistics hub represents for the country. “We took on the challenge of becoming a regional logistics hub, which represents an opportunity, but also an enormous responsibility,” the president exclaimed.
He also pledged that the development of this activity, along with others related to the Dominican coasts, will be carried out taking into consideration criteria of sustainability and social justice.
Abinader also spoke about national efforts to move towards sustainable management, highlighting that the Dominican Republic has already protected 30% of its marine territory, reaching a key goal of the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework for Biological Diversity.
Furthermore, the President announced the development of a maritime strategy, a tool that will guide the protection and sustainable use of its waters and encourage an open-access oceanographic data platform, already in use by fishermen, researchers and others.
