Javier Matutes advocates for a strategic tourism plan that defines where the DR wants to be in ten or twenty years.
The tourism sector should not only focus on the record numbers of tourist arrivals, but it is also important to evaluate how competitive the country continues to be compared to other destinations, in addition to the fact that the future of the sector is increasingly focused on a more responsible tourism.
The considerations were raised yesterday by Spanish investors in the sector, while participating in a panel on the future of tourism organized by the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain.
According to Abel Matutes, president of Palladium Hotel Group, it is important to see if the DR is gaining or losing competitiveness concerning other places.
“If the country remains competitive it will continue to attract more investment,” he said.
He pointed out that we must try to revitalize destinations that have declined, in addition to trying, among all, to continue to generate “a broth” of competitiveness, which will make the country continue to receive investments.
“If we simply stay in the figures and do not see the possible dangers that may come, when they impact we are going to regret it,” he said.
While Encarna Piñero, of Grupo Piñero, considered that the future of tourism is to be more responsible because that is what will make the destination more competitive and sustainable over time.
Likewise, Gabriel Escarrer, president of Meliá Hotels, understands that it is necessary to have a long-term vision. He advocated for a strategic tourism plan, not just for one term of office, but a State pact of all the tourist poles to define where the DR is to be located in ten or twenty years’ time.
“The long-term vision would bring more investment. To see which are the poles that we want to develop. This would be fundamental to ensure part of that competitiveness,” he explained.
