President Luis Abinader said that the country’s free zone sector is a world reference that has become an important pillar of economic growth, which foresees a growth of 500 million dollars and 32,500 new jobs by 2023.
The Head of State highlighted the performance of the free zone sector and its great contribution to the national economy when delivering the opening speech at the XXV Conference of Free Zones of Ibero-America hosted by the Association of Free Zones of the Americas (AFZA).
“The Dominican Republic continues to grow and become a world reference in various economic sectors related to free zones, and this sector has played a decisive role and has become an essential pillar in the economic and social growth of our country,” said the President.
The Free Zones sector foresees an investment amounting to more than 500 million dollars, and the creation of some 32,500 direct jobs by 2023, according to data offered by the Dominican Association of Free Zones (Adozona), the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) and the National Council of Free Export Zones.
In addition to the forecasts, the sector presented recorded figures showing the unprecedented results and performance seen throughout 2022, including job creation and training, exports, number of companies, investment and local purchases.
The Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM), Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, said that undoubtedly, the sector represents one of the main creators of jobs in the economy, and that, unlike other productive sectors, 100% is formal employment.
He added that the free zones registered about 192,000 jobs at the end of October. “And I must add that it’s not just about more jobs, it’s about better more technified jobs, where more than 32% corresponds to technical and professional level positions, and more than 50% corresponds to female jobs,” said Bisonó.
