President Luis Abinader met for an hour with the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver Carone, who said that the Dominican economy is expected to be the “fastest growing” in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2022.
“The meeting was about the economic growth of the Dominican Republic and particularly to support the economic management of President Luis Abinader, which we have obviously seen in difficult times … the Dominican economy last year was one of the fastest growing economies in the entire Caribbean, with more than 12% and we expect a repeat of this situation again this year,” said Claver Carone.
The head of the IDB said that for this and other reasons he is working together with the head of state to implement economic policies and other projects.
“We are also working together on important projects such as the port in Manzanillo, a port that will be able to change with the transformational landscape both for the Dominican Republic and for the entire Caribbean,” he added, when leaving the meeting that was held behind closed doors at the National Palace.
PLAN
In August of last year, Abinader said that the planned rehabilitation and expansion the port in Manzanillo is vital to bringing the Dominican Republic to the highest levels of competitiveness throughout the region.
This project is being carried out with an “unspecified” investment by the IDB and will also create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.
The meeting was attended by the State Secretary, José Ignacio Paliza; the Minister of Finance, José Manuel Vicente (Jochi); among other officials and members of the international organization.
