Good connectivity and political stability position the Dominican Republic as a benchmark for tourism investment. These qualities are among the key indicators that have driven service improvements and the expansion of Hyatt Hotels Corporation in the country, which currently boasts more than 120 hotels, 26 of which are located on Dominican beaches.
“The strong air connectivity that the Dominican Republic has with Canada, the United States, Europe, and Latin America has created demand and growth opportunities. These have been made possible thanks to the government’s efforts to position the island as a secure investment destination, where political stability inspires investor confidence,” said Fernando Fernández, Vice President of Development for Latin America and the Caribbean at Hyatt.
He explained that political stability has positively impacted investment, as the facilities and incentives provided by the government to the tourism sector give investors the assurance that the Dominican Republic is a safe place to invest.
“Political stability has had a huge impact, because it’s one of the first things an investor looks at — the security of their investment, that laws won’t change overnight. The political continuity the Dominican Republic has experienced in recent years has strengthened investor confidence,” he added.
The close relationship between the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and hotel owners, as well as its active role within the Dominican Republic Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores) and other government agencies, is also a key factor in the sector’s success, according to Fernández.
For the executive, who has been with Hyatt for over 10 years and has more than 40 years of experience in hotel operations, the task for the sector is clear: “To continue investing,” he told Listín Diario.
“The task is to keep investing — what’s essential is to maintain trust. Many of our owners don’t just have one hotel with us; they have several. Building that level of trust so that investors are confident in the return on their investment is crucial for them to keep investing — in us as operators and in the country as an investment destination,” he emphasized.
