Dominican exports increased during the first five months of 2021 by US$1,054.3 million compared to the same period of 2020, going from US$3,704 million to US$4,758.34, which represents a growth of 28.4%
According to the figures offered by the General Directorate of Customs (DGA), in January-May 2019 the country exported US$4,056.8 million, before the pandemic that has hit world trade arrived.
When comparing that period with the first five months of this year, an increase of US$701.6 million is reflected, for a growth of 17%.
The official figures of the DGA show that the line of greatest international demand is that of fine pearls, stones, and precious metals, made in free zones, which this year have exported US$1,088.12 million, while in the same period of 2020 they reported US$795.4 million, 36.8% more.
According to data from the institution, the second line with the highest export value in 2021 is tobacco and its derivatives with US$516.55, which in 2020 had a drop, exporting just US$286.5 million, or US$230 million less.
During the first five months of 2021, this subsector has grown 80% compared to the same period last year.
Another line that shows robust numbers is that of electrical machines and materials, which this year has exported US$490.7 million, surpassing the commercialization of US$467 million by 5% in 2020.
According to Customs data, despite the pandemic that hit world trade in 2020, the optical instruments and devices sector exported US$428.3 million and in the same period this year US$460 million for an increase of US $ 31.7 million, which is equivalent to a relative growth of 7.4%.
