On May 9, Europeans celebrated Europe Day, a commemorative occasion that honors the starting point of the continent’s political and economic integration, as well as the peace achieved as a result of a decades-long collective effort.

Our managing partner, Enrique De Marchena Kaluche participated in the seminar held at the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs Convention Center, within the context of celebrating Europe Day.

Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez offered the central speech of the panel: “The future of relations between the Dominican Republic and the European Union”. Minister Álvarez was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Bilateral Foreign Policy, José Julio Gómez, who served as moderator, with panelists distinguished Ambassadors Katja Afheldt of the European Union; Volker Pellet from Germany; Stefano Queirolo Palmas from Italy; Eric Fournier from France; Antonio Pérez-Hernandez y Torra, from Spain; and Annemieke Verrjip from the Netherlands.

Also present at the conference were Angelina Biviana Riveiro Disla, Executive Director of ProDominicana; in addition to members of the diplomatic and consular corps accredited in the country; various institutions of the Dominican Government and other MIREXRD officials.

In his speech, Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez pointed out that the Dominican Republic is the European Union’s main trading partner in the Caribbean. He also indicated that if the agreement recently signed by the Dominican Republic with Costa Rica and Panama were to constitute an economic bloc, it would become the 3rd economic partner of the United States and the 5th of the European Union.
