On 21 February, the Dominican Embassy in Jamaica, led by Ambassador Angie Martinez, formally opened the first Dominican Week in the country.
Moderated by Enrique De Marchena Kaluche, past President of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), the main panel dealt with tourism and the opportunities and synergies between the 2 Caribbean islands.
De Marchena was accompanied by Paola Rainieri, Chief Marketing Officer of Grupo Puntacana, who spoke about expansion plans for Punta Cana International Airport, the projected investment by the group in new hotels, as well as the company’s involvement in the environment, education and health, as part of its corporate social responsibility.
She recalled that Grupo Puntacana had participated in a tender for Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport.
De Marchena interviewed the president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourism Association, Robin Russel, who indicated that he will come to the Dominican Republic at the end of March as part of a delegation focused on investment, and pointed out the interest of Jamaican hoteliers to learn more about the Dominican model that has brought so much success to the country in generating foreign currency and jobs.
José Blanco Tejera, Vice President of Viva Resorts, also intervened. When asked by De Marchena, he spoke about the hotel company’s project in Jamaica due to start at the beginning of 2024, and the opportunities that exist on the Caribbean island.
Earlier, the Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, indicated that the opening of regular flights by Arajet means the development agenda of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic multi-destination tourism is getting closer to reality.
Present at the event were the Ministers of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, Foreign Affairs, Kamina Johnson Smith, and Industry, Investment and Trade, Aubyn Hill, as well as the Ambassador of Spain in Jamaica, Diego Bermejo.
