Tourism Minister David Collado said on Tuesday that the country expects to close this year with an income of 8.4 billion dollars in foreign exchange thanks to tourism, which will help maintain economic stability.
The official asserted that the Dominican Republic is recovering from the blow that the Covid-19 pandemic dealt to the sector.
“We gambled on being a safe destination in the middle of the pandemic, in the middle of darkness. The Dominican Republic had an entrepreneurial view to the future,” said the official and pointed to providing special medical insurance for tourists who arrived and the timely design of a health protocol as the key measures for this recovery.
Speaking at the commemoration of World Tourism Day at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, Collado mentioned the measures prompting industries such as the movie industry to look at the Dominican as a destination to shoot, when it was still banned in the USA, and stressed how this way many Hollywood stars served to promote the Dominican Republic as a safe destination on social networks.
The minister said that, as part of the strategy he followed to promote the country, he approached the Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra, who recorded an advertisement for free promoting the benefits of the Dominican Republic in the midst of the pandemic.
Figures
Collado expects this year to be the best in the history of Dominican tourism, seeing as the arrival of tourists since April has exceeded all pre-pandemic numbers. As of August this year, a total of 4,904,162 tourists have arrived.
“We can say today, September 27, that despite Hurricane Fiona, the Dominican Republic will have the best September in history and will break records again, surpassing the barrier of 400,000 foreigners in a month of September for the first time,” he said.
Deputy Minister Jacqueline Mora accompanied Collado at the event and released the data and highlighted the performance of the PUCMM in the formation of this sector.
“Every career has its leader and today we are in the faculty and university that is definitely a leader in the tourism career. I think tourism was born here in the Dominican Republic,” she said.
