The monthly report of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD) indicates that during the January-June period of the year 2021 the arrival of non-resident passengers to the country through the different international airports was 1,897,643 tourists, for a growth of 36.1% compared to the same period of the previous year. Of this total, 68.4% correspond to non-resident foreigners, and the remaining 1.6% to non-resident Dominicans.
The BCRD highlights that in a particular way, in June 2021, it is worth noting that 462,536 tourists arrived by air to the Dominican Republic, of which 72.0% correspond to non-resident foreigners (333,048 passengers) and the remaining 28.0 % to non-resident Dominicans (129,488 passengers), representing 78.8% of those received in June 2019.
In this sense, the proportion of the arrival of non-resident passengers during 2021 compared to the same month of 2019, considering that year in normal conditions and free of COVID -19, has maintained an increasing rate, reflecting a sustained trend towards the recovery of the sector.
The report published by the BCRD indicates that it is important to clarify that both the figures offered by the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and the Central Bank on the results of the arrival of passengers correspond to the same source of information in the records of the Directorate General of Migration (DGM).
Regarding the behavior that the flow of passengers entering the country has been showing, it is worth highlighting the positive effect of the recovery plan launched by the Tourism Cabinet together with the private sector, which includes the implementation of health safety protocols in establishments. tourism, relief of the tax burden, as well as monetary and financial measures to enable the continuity of the operations of small and medium tourism companies.
Regarding the outlook for the coming months, the behavior of the arrival of tourists to the Dominican Republic will continue to be conditioned mainly by the global evolution of the pandemic, the relaxation of restrictive measures in the main emitting countries, and the effectiveness of global mass vaccinations against the coronavirus.
When adding the arrival of resident travelers, the total number of resident and non-resident passengers who arrived by air during the period January-June of the year 2021 was 2,124,997 passengers, for an interannual variation of 38.2%, which represented 587,365 additional passengers with relation to the same period of the year 2020.
