Under the leadership of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores), the sector has been unified, strengthened, and planned.
The private sector dedicated to the tourism and restaurant industry has been key to promoting the evolution and development of the sector and today the country receives 7.2 million tourists, generates more than 500 thousand direct jobs, and contributes more than 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Under the leadership of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores) the sector has been unified, strengthened, and planned over the years. In addition, the entity has served as a liaison to align all public and private agents so that plans are made jointly.
These central ideas come from the documentary 60 Years Building the History of Dominican Tourism, which shows the historic contribution of the private sector to position the Dominican Republic as one of the world’s leading destinations.
The documentary, made to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Asonahores, shows its beginnings in 1962 by Alejandro “Candito” Alma and José Manuel “Mecho” Lovatón, as an institution representing the hotels and restaurants concentrated in Santo Domingo. Between 1970 and 1990, the first large hotels were created in Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata, and the foundations were laid for the growth of the sector.
