Álvaro Uribe said that the country was able to tap into the potential advantages of agriculture and free zones.
Former president of Colombia Álvaro Uribe said yesterday that the American continent must admire the Dominican Republic because the country has undergone a constant consolidation process of its institutions and added that proof of the confidence created by the DR can be seen in foreign investment figures.
On a panel with the former president of Uruguay Luis Alberto Lacalle, at the 2022 Regional Meeting on Technology, Politics and Economy, which was inaugurated by President Luis Abinader, the former Colombian president said that the country has done smart things, such as tapping into potential agricultural advantages.
“What they are doing so that their free zones and contract manufacturers not only export but also provide for the needs for national expansion seems very useful to me,” he said.
He also called on political leaders not to let “this great country deteriorate.”
Lacalle, for his part, indicated that the DR is on the right track according to the economic indicators.
“GDP growth is one of the most important indicators and I think there’s a sense that it’s a pragmatic government, which doesn’t stick too much to color and etiquette,” he said.
He explained that government instruments, such as lowering inflation and controlling public spending to make it more efficient, are things that have no color or smell, and that Abinader is supporting, as he understands.
Record numbers
In his speech, President Luis Abinader recalled the record figures in foreign investment and the largest foreign exchange reserve thanks to the legal security enjoyed by the country.
The President reiterated that the Dominican Republic has a leading growth in the region and that month after month the free zones are showing record numbers.
“We have risen eight places in the human development index in just two years,” Abinader said when the activity opened.
