In the last 10 years, companies established in the country have exported US$827.2 million to Spain, making it the fifth export destination to Europe, according to data provided by the Center for Export and Investment of the Dominican Republic (ProDominicana).

Furthermore, Spain is the main trading partner of the Dominican Republic among European markets. In addition, in the last 10 years, it has become the fourth source of foreign investment with an accumulated amount of US $ 6,412.4 million.

“Spain is an extremely important commercial partner for our country, not only from the point of view of placing the Dominican exportable offer with products such as rum, tobacco; free zone products such as medical devices, equipment, textile products, as well as all our agro-industrial products that are also demanded by the Spanish market ”, expressed Biviana Riveiro Disla, executive director of ProDominicana.

The official offered her statements when leading the signing of an inter-institutional agreement between ProDominicana and the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the Dominican Republic, which aims to generate new business opportunities for exporters and expand the capacity to attract Foreign Direct Investment ( FDI) of the Spanish capital.

“Our purpose is that the members of the Chamber can find that direct link with local products so that the products that are of interest to them. But, at the same time, accompany Spanish companies that want to establish themselves in the country ”, said the official.

She added that through this agreement, ProDominicana is having a mechanism to establish a continuous and updated information flow between the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the Dominican Republic and the Center for Export and Investment of the Dominican Republic.

On his side, Francisco (Paco) Pérez, president of the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the Dominican Republic, explained that a year ago the president of the Republic, Luis Abinader, cited Spain as one of his priorities for doing business. Since then, he explained, there are several approaches that have been made at the public and private levels to make that vision a reality.

He added that the step they are taking today should serve to strengthen and be able to promote new possibilities to make the commercial and investment relationship that exists between the two countries grow and translate into job creation and wealth for their citizens.

He highlighted that Spanish investment in the country is important, highlighting that only 65% ​​of the hotels in the Dominican Republic are owned by Spanish investment in the tourism sector. In addition, he indicated that there are also investments in areas such as renewable energy and real estate.

“Investment is growing and, definitely, with this agreement that we are signing with ProDominicana the idea is to promote and that growth is sustained and, in addition, it is facilitated in terms of information and permission for all investors who want to come to this country” ”, Expressed Paco Pérez.

He revealed that Spanish investors are interested in the Dominican agricultural sector and, furthermore, he understands that there are opportunities in all sectors.

“We are talking that this agreement will promote investment in both directions. We at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce have almost 500 partners, who are Spanish companies, but also Dominican ones who have an interest in having representations of Spanish companies here in the country or simply to export the products that they generate in the Dominican Republic. and, on the other hand, Spanish investors who have an interest in different segments of the industries and investment here in the country ”, said the executive.
