President Luis Abinader assured that today the Dominican Republic is the best place to invest in Latin America during the inauguration of W Punta Cana, Adult All-Inclusive, which involved an investment of USD 160 million.
In his speech, the leader highlighted the positive impact of such investments on the country’s tourism and economic development, noting that this hotel was launched during difficult times amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
He stated that in recent years, North American hotel chains have expanded in the Dominican Republic, making the country the second largest recipient of U.S. investment in Latin America, only after Mexico.
He also mentioned that currently, 15,000 hotel rooms are under construction, with around 6,000 set to be inaugurated this year, driving the creation of quality jobs and economic stability for Dominicans.
The new hotel complex, located in Uvero Alto and developed through a strategic collaboration between Marriott International, Grupo Puntacana, and Mac Hotels, features 340 rooms and suites, 12 restaurants celebrating Dominican and international cuisine, an AWAY Spa with world-class facilities, and immersive experiences designed exclusively for adults focused on music, wellness, and avant-garde design.
Support from the Government in the Tourism Sector
During his welcome remarks, Frank Elías Rainieri, President and CEO of Grupo Puntacana, highlighted the Dominican government’s support for the development of national tourism, stating that “President Luis Abinader and his government have provided constant support to tourism, which today is an example of leadership and resilience across the region.”
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister David Collado celebrated the arrival of an iconic brand like W Hotels to the Dominican portfolio and emphasized that it operates under an all-inclusive system.
He stated that Dominican tourism is in the best moment of its history, despite a decline in visitors from the United States, which has been offset by more arrivals from South America and a recovery in the European market.
Country’s Strategic Importance for Marriott
Brian King, President of Marriott International for the Caribbean and Latin America, highlighted the strategic importance of the Dominican market for Marriott International.
He reaffirmed the company’s vision to continue strengthening the destination with flagship projects and the integration of the most recognized brands in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.
Begoña Amengual, CEO of Mac Hotels, thanked the president for supporting the industry’s development through incentives for new projects, helping to grow tourism’s contribution to the GDP and creating jobs.
The event was also attended by Daisy D’ Oleo, Governor of La Altagracia Province; and Minoru Matsunaga, Director of Tourism Police.
