According to statements by Industry, Commerce and MSME Minister, Victor Ito- Bisono, exports from the medical-pharmaceutical sector in 2023 reached US$ 2,521.7 million, a notable growth compared to previous years.
He highlighted that the diversity of exported products, including ostomy equipment, transfusion products and neurosurgical valves, among others, has allowed the country to consolidate the country’s key role in the global medical device market.
The Minister stated that “The Dominican Republic has established itself as a key player in the global medical device market. We are proud to be the third largest exporter of ostomy devices and the third largest Latin American exporter of medical instruments to the USA as well as the largest exporter of ostomy devices to that market.”
Dialogue about health
According to a press release, the minister was speaking during the second top-level Economic and Health Dialogue of the Americas (EHA), where Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, Jose W. Fernandez and Public Health Minister, Victor Atallah both took part.
The minister took the opportunity to reiterate the country’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare industry, as well as regional cooperation to address common challenges and promote sustainable development in the region.
- The second top-level EHA meeting was attended by representative from the USA, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), among other key role players.
Topics such as Adaptive Social Protection and strengthening supply chains in the Western Hemisphere were discussed during the meeting.
Significant advances were made in regional cooperation, with the active participation of various Latin American and Caribbean countries in the search for joint solutions to improve heath and the economy in the region.
The Americas Health and Economic Dialogue is a space to exchange ideas and for multisector collaboration aimed at fostering a healthier and more prosperous future for all nations of the Americas.
