El Programa de Fomento al Turismo Ciudad Colonial, a través de su observatorio, informó que durante el primer trimestre de 2017 se incrementó en un 10% la visita de turistas a la zona en comparación con igual período del año anterior.
Atraídos por las ofertas del casco histórico, en las áreas cultural, gastronómica, histórica y de diversión 214,393 turistas visitaron la ciudad de enero a marzo de este año. En el 2016 en el igual período los visitantes extranjeros sumaron 194,656. De acuerdo con los cálculos hechos por el Observatorio Turístico, un promedio de 1,500 extranjeros visitó la Ciudad colonial y alrededor de 890 pernoctaron en la misma.
Las estadísticas dadas a conocer por Maribel Villalona revelan que la tasa de ocupación hotelera en estos primero tres meses del año fue de 69% para un aumento de un 4% con relación al 2016, mientras que la llegada de turistas por cruceros fue de 53% para un total de 75,697 en el primer trimestre. Villalona indicó que el gasto turístico promedio de cada visitante a la Ciudad Colonial de enero a marzo fue de US$151.30 por día.

Tourist attractions
There are about 39 projects underway in the area to make the area attractive for tourism, including the recovery of streets, restoration of buildings, new museography, sustainable urban mobility plan, urban embellishment, security and restoration of façades, underground cable and street lighting, as well as nightclubs and restaurants.
