Every year, the\u00a0Dominican Republic\u00a0is a major recipient of\u00a0Foreign Direct Investment. The arrival of foreign capital, along with tourism, exports, and free zones, are the prime movers of the\u00a0Dominican economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the definition by the\u00a0Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean\u00a0(ECLAC), {Foreign\u00a0direct\u00a0investment}<\/em> \u201cis an investment made by a resident enterprise in one economy (direct investor or parent enterprise) with the objective of establishing a lasting interest in an enterprise that is resident in another economy\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the information available on\u00a0ProDominicana’s\u00a0Data Market portal, the United States is the country where most of the flow of foreign direct investment to the Dominican Republic comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States, Canada and Mexico are the three largest sources of foreign direct investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2021, the total flow was US$1362.3 million and at the end of the first quarter of 2022, the amount reached US$320.3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foreign direct investment reached US$1,870.9 million between January and June 2022, an expansion of 8.0% compared to the same period in 2021 and 20% with the first half of 2019.
