The Vice Minister of Free Zones and Special Regimes of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Mypimes, Carlos Flaquer, assured that he is pleasantly surprised by the growth of the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interviewed by journalist Lorenny Solano on the Dominican Good Night program, Carlos Flaquer said that the country’s exports have grown by 28% in the first half of this year and that this growth is driven by 70% by the free zones, which in turn time they have grown 34%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He highlighted the growth of non-traditional sectors such as jewelry, with 130%, recycling with more than 15%, electrical products with more than 11%, the textile sector with 71%, and medical products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He outlined the great growth of the tobacco sector by 80%. “In other words, from 305 million dollars that the country exported in the first half of last year to more than 600 million dollars this year and the way in which this sector has responded has been very gratifying,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Carlos Flaquer made it clear that the free zones in the country not only focus on textiles, as was the case in the past, but that they have diversified, and gave an example that the device that separates plasma from the blood is widely used In this context of the Covid, “these machines are made here in Haina, catheter devices, neurosurgery utensils, the products of electrical components which allow you to turn on a light at home are made in the Dominican Republic.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The official said that they are working on developing local suppliers and that during the pandemic the sector that recovered 100% of its jobs was that of free zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“173 thousand jobs, with a recovery of 53 thousand jobs, which impacts 53 thousand families, fathers, and young mothers with dreams,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pointed out that there is an opportunity for technicians, engineers and that there are companies that contact up to 300 employees a week, but that requires a higher level of English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
