The Minister of Labor, Luis Miguel De Camps, said that there is still an important stretch to recover the jobs lost during the pandemic, but he sees with optimism how the sector is reactivated

He reported that by March 2020, when the pandemic began, direct jobs in the tourism sector represented 7.8% of formal jobs. Likewise, in August 2020, one of the most critical moments of the health crisis, the indicator dropped to 4.43%.

“Thanks to all the efforts and policies implemented, as of March 2021, we had already achieved an important recovery that represented 5.44% and, in August 2021, the date of the last record cut in SIRLA, this indicator already showed an impact of the 5.8% of registered national formal employment ”, pointed out the official during the“ Asonahores Meeting: tourism sector in a new work environment ”, organized by the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores).

He added that the “resurgence offers great challenges and opportunities. Perhaps the most notorious are those linked to the development of more environmentally sustainable tourism that generates a greater transfer of wealth and development for the communities ”.

De Camps added that the transfer of wealth should manifest itself not only in a significant improvement in wages and benefits for workers in the tourism sector, “which is a pending conversation but also in a paradigm shift in which spending tourism leaves the hotel walls, impacting the communities and promoting the consumption of the goods and services that they can offer ”.

Rafael Blanco Tejera, president of Asonahores, assured that the road to normality will be long and full of challenges, due to the great uncertainty that persists.
