Speaking with businessmen and Ibero-American leaders yesterday, President Luis Abinader presented the investment opportunities offered by the Dominican Republic, with emphasis on free zones, tourism, semiconductors, Pedernales and rare earths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a meeting organized by the Business Council Alliance for Ibero-America (Ceapi) and the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom, Abinader highlighted the advancement of free zones towards higher value-added activities. He pointed out that the country exports more than US$2,700 million in medical devices and more than US$3,000 million in electrical devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also reported that Dominican workers are being trained to initially join semiconductor assembly processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The President estimated that the economy will grow at least 4.5% this year and stated that foreign investment remains above US$5,000 million. He also indicated that public debt went from representing 67% of GDP in 2020 to around 57% currently. According to his data, accumulated poverty in the year stands at 14.5%, compared to 26% in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rare Earths<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Abinader reported that a more accurate assessment of the rare earth resources identified in the country is expected by the end of this year. He said that the studies carried out lead to expectations about their possible economic value, although the extent of the resources has yet to be determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The President said that, if extraction is confirmed, the revenues could be managed through a sovereign wealth fund, with half used to reduce public debt and the other half to finance infrastructure. \u201cRare earths could become one of the country\u2019s most important sources of non-tax revenue in the coming years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pedernales<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The President also emphasized Pedernales\u2019 tourism development, noting that the port expects to receive about 300,000 cruise passengers this year and that hotels and an airport are being built to support the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On international trade, Abinader reiterated that the United States is the DR\u2019s main strategic partner, while the country continues to maintain trade relations with China. He also underscored the role of free zones and nearshoring in attracting investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meeting with Keiko Fujimori<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In the interest of continuing to strengthen relations between the two nations and explore new opportunities for cooperation, Abinader also met with the President of Peru, Keiko Fujimori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the meeting, the Dominican president expressed interest in maintaining the best relations with Peru and encouraging existing ties between the two countries. Abinader will speak at the United Nations assembly on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n High-Level Dialogue on AI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In New York, the head of state also took part in the Inter-American Development Bank\u2019s (IDB) high-level dialogue on artificial intelligence (AI), where he called for a Latin American strategy to address the technology\u2019s impact on economic activity. He said development and regulations should move forward together.
