The Dominican economy has kept its pace of expansion by registering a 4.7% year-on-year increase in its economic activity during the month of May 2026. This result means that the average accumulated growth during the first five months of the year stood at 4.2%, according to preliminary figures from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD).

In May, this growth was driven mainly by the construction industry, which grew by 7.1%, followed by mining (6.4%) and service activities in general (5.3%), including professional services (8.3%), financial services (8.2%), education (7.7%), other market service activities (6.5%), hotels, bars and restaurants (6.2%), health (6.1%) and transport and storage (5.1%) stood out.

In addition, local manufacturing grew 2.9% and agriculture by 2.0%. However, the added value of free zone manufacturing fell by 4.1 percent.

The BCRD report explains that the growth of the construction sector responds both to the execution of privately funded commercial, residential and tourism projects well as financing facilities.

In fact, credit for construction increased by 23.7% compared to last year, injecting more than RD$35,000 additional million into the sector and boosting sales of the main construction inputs, evidencing the productive chains that characterize this sector.

The growth in tourism (hotels, bars and restaurants) is explained by the fact that, in May alone, the country received 743,983 tourists by air, 10.4% more than in the same month in 2025. At the end of the first five months, the accumulated flow of international tourists reached 4,146,831 people, equivalent to a growth of 10.8% compared to the same period last year.

For its part, financial intermediation, insurance and related activities experienced a growth of 8.2%, a result that was influenced by an 8.6% increase in credit directed to the private sector in domestic and foreign currency, equivalent to an additional RD$203 billion compared to May 2025.

Mining registered a year-on-year growth of 6.4% in May 2026, explained by the increase in the extraction of gold and silver, in a context of favorable international prices for these metals. Likewise, local manufacturing expanded 2.9%, largely due to increases in the production of non-metallic minerals, alcoholic beverages, and chemical substances.

Increasing growth

So far in 2026, the Dominican economy has shown an upward growth trend, reflecting the resilience of the national productive apparatus in a complex international context. This year, the economy started with a year-on-year increase of 3.5%; In February, productive activity accelerated its pace by registering an increase of 3.9%, while March consolidated itself as the month of greatest expansion so far this year, reaching a rebound of 5.1%.

In April, growth experienced a slight moderation, standing at 3.8%, and in May it rose to 4.7 percent.

This dynamism is achieved in the midst of a complex external context, affected by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the increase in the costs of international transport of goods and oil.

The Dominican economy has kept its pace of expansion by registering a 4.7% year-on-year increase in its economic activity during the month of May 2026.
