The World Bank expects the Dominican economy to expand by 3.0% in 2025 and 4.3% in 2026. Medium-term growth will be driven by consumption and investment, supported by structural reforms in the energy and water sectors, along with efforts to improve education and attract foreign direct investment (FDI). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The chief economist for Latin America and the Caribbean, William Maloney, says that there are some obstacles on the road regarding the country\u2019s fiscal reform and stresses that the fiscal deficit is being managed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maloney spoke to the press yesterday as part of the virtual presentation of the multilateral financial organization’s report \u201cLatin America and the Caribbean Economic Outlook, October 2025\u201d. He did not specify details of these issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
No date has been set to put tax reform in the debate, but it is known that the Government is working to present a proposal in due course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The fiscal deficit is being managed. There are some bumps in the road in terms of tax reform,” he stressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maloney said, however, that the World Bank continues to support the government’s efforts in this area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding the most dynamic sectors, he pointed out that it is difficult to know what they are, but it is clear that tourism is the most obvious, as well as other areas in manufacturing, which are doing quite well in the last two years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“In fact, if we look at productivity growth, the Dominican Republic stands out as one of the stars of the region,” Maloney said, expressing his interest in knowing the reason for the boost, and that the economy seems to be on a reasonable growth path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Entrepreneurship<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Although he said he does not know the exact place where the Dominican Republic, the World Bank report highlights that entrepreneurship can boost employment and growth in Latin America and the Caribbean and highlighted the progress that the region has achieved in general. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “There is a great level of enthusiasm, and the region is quite enterprising, including the Dominican Republic. The issue is not the desire or enthusiasm to start or create a company, that is in the region\u2019s DNA. The problem is to make sure that they have the capabilities, that there are companies generating good high value jobs,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Communiqu\u00e9<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Latin America and the Caribbean continue their efforts to revive growth and create more and better jobs, but progress remains limited. The regional growth rate is expected to increase slightly, from 2.2% in 2024 to 2.3% in 2025, but with several individual economies facing downward revisions to their projections, the World Bank says.
