{"id":11659,"date":"2025-07-27T13:01:53","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T13:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dmklawyers.com\/?p=11659"},"modified":"2025-07-27T13:01:56","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T13:01:56","slug":"guyana-and-the-dominican-republic-led-fdi-inflows-in-the-caribbean-in-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dmklawyers.com\/en\/guyana-and-the-dominican-republic-led-fdi-inflows-in-the-caribbean-in-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Guyana and the Dominican Republic led FDI inflows in the Caribbean in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ECLAC Warns That Investments in Latin America Are Moving Away from Innovative Sectors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana and the Dominican Republic led last year in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Caribbean region, with Guyana receiving 10.401 billion dollars, mainly due to oil and gas extraction, while the Dominican Republic received 4.523 billion dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the FDI amount captured by the country, the services sector was the main destination, totaling 4.043 billion dollars, an 18% increase compared to 2023, and representing 89% of the inflows for the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unprecedented amount of FDI attracted by the national economy represented a 3% increase over 2023, marking the fourth consecutive year of growth, according to the report&nbsp;<em>Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2025<\/em>, prepared by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to services, the manufacturing sector attracted resources amounting to 441 million dollars, equivalent to 10% of the total. The United States was the main source of investment in the country, contributing 1.162 billion dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the report warns that the regional investment profile has gradually moved away from sectors associated with innovation, workforce capacity improvement, and long-term productivity growth, which could &#8220;indicate that the opportunity to leverage FDI as a driver of productive development is being wasted.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It suggests attracting investment to sectors such as digital services, communications, financial services, and engineering-intensive manufacturing. It states that while FDI can be a catalyst to boost productive development in emerging economies, not all investments are equally beneficial in this regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the fastest-growing sectors in attracting foreign investment in the country is renewable energy, which alone received 361 million dollars last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, this sector tends to generate more limited indirect effects on other activities, as productivity gains are often linked to the import of capital goods and external knowledge, the report indicates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interest in Tourism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ECLAC states in its study that the Dominican Republic\u2019s hotel and tourism sector attracted projects worth 210.8 million dollars in 2024, and although in recent years it has been surpassed by renewable energies, investor interest has also grown considerably since the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe expansion of these sectors has translated into an average annual project announcement value of 1.9 billion dollars in the Dominican Republic during the 2020s, representing an increase of 14.3% compared to the 2010s,\u201d the report highlights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guyana and the Dominican Republic led last year in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Caribbean region, with Guyana receiving 10.401 billion dollars, mainly due to oil and gas extraction, while the Dominican Republic received 4.523 billion dollars.
