In the first eight months of this year, 5,961,488 tourists stayed overnight in the Dominican Republic, while 1,820,202 were visiting aboard a cruise ship, according to data presented this Wednesday by the Ministry of Tourism.

Altogether, the country was the destination of choice for 7,781,690 visitors between January and August of this year, representing a 10% growth compared to January-August 2023, and an expansion of up to 44% when compared to the 2019 tourist flow, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In August alone, 10,072 more foreign non-resident visitors arrived at Dominican airports than in August of last year, increasing from 665,124 in August 2023 to 675,196 in the same period this year, marking a 2% rise.

According to surveys conducted by this institution, 65% of these passengers considered other destinations but ultimately chose the Dominican Republic for its beaches, hotels, or because their family and acquaintances are here, showing how robust the sun-and-beach offering remains within the tourism industry.

“92% of all tourists who came in August would return, and 63% would become ambassadors, recommending the destination,” highlighted the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, during the presentation of the results this Wednesday. Unlike previous occasions, where the press conference was accompanied by artistic performances, community videos, or the broadcast of the podcast “Hablemos de resultados,” this event was a conventional press conference with journalists, special guests, and tourism sector representatives, focused solely on the statistics.

57% of the passengers who traveled to the country by air in that month came from the United States, while 8% came from Canada.

Colombia remained among the top five countries visiting the Dominican Republic, with 4%, followed by Spain (3%) and the United Kingdom (3%), the latter being a market that has recently recovered and recorded 16% growth.
